"After over 16 years teaching Pilates in health club settings & returning to horse-riding myself after a 25 year break, I was interested in how I could use my Pilates knowledge to help equestrians. I was initially recommended Lindsays book ‘Core Connection’ which helped me understand the differences in biomechanics for horse riders and how Pilates principles could be adapted to improve Rider position, and it inspired me to find out more.
As more and more of my equestrian clients were benefiting from Pilates, I was keen to understand more about Equipilates and develop my skills in teaching equestrians. In 2015, I enrolled on Lindsay’s Equipilates Biomechanics Trainer™ Level 1 course. Lindsay’s perspective to her approach has been developed and tested over time, as she herself is a dressage rider, horse-riding instructor and Pilates trainer with rider development at the core of her ethos. The course was intensive, and challenging - it included a combination of practical and theory to give the learner opportunity to develop their teaching skills to include the Equipilates™ approach in both a one to one setting and teaching groups. Lindsay’s style of teaching made it a really enjoyable experience. An experienced trainer/presenter, there was ample opportunity to gain Lindsay’s support with the learning and even post course when I was back at home completing my portfolio on two case study clients, Lindsay offered support over the phone and by email. This course surpassed all expectations for me - what I thought would be a course adapting the original Pilates principles for equestrians turned out to be so much more. The Equipilates™ focus on intrinsic Biomechanics (how the body/joints are functioning) together with developing the skill/expertise to screen, assess and prescribe tailored exercise programmes for clients has added a whole new dimension to my Pilates service offer. I now work with Equestrian Practitioners across the industry to offer Equipilates™ at dressage camps, Riding Club events and on a one to one basis. I also offer regular Equipilates™ group sessions at local venues.
I am at at the start of my journey with Equipilates™ as a qualified Biomechanics Trainer and already it has added credibility to my skill set as it is a nationally and internationally recognised brand and qualification. It is of real benefit too to be part of a wider Equipilates™ national team who I can gain support from and share ideas with the added advantage of additional CPD courses to develop skills further. I particularly like the holistic approach to Rider Wellbeing, that Equipilates™ offers and believe it offers numerous possibilities in terms of supporting Equestrians in their goals to improve performance and build harmonious relationships with their equine partners.” (Sonia Todd -Equipilates Biomechanics Trainer™)
